Participation – The
program is designed to maximize the resident’s participation and
experience in all daily activities of Anatomic and Clinical Pathology.
Residents are given a core curriculum of lectures covering all major aspects
of Pathology. During each rotation, the resident has daily reading assignments
that are discussed with the faculty and/or technologists. Residents also
participate in journal clubs and numerous multidisciplinary clinico-pathologic
conferences.
Call / Consults –
During their rotations, residents take Pathology Call with faculty supervision.
A faculty member reviews each Call/Consult. With each successive month
of training, the resident assumes graduated responsibility: interpreting
laboratory results, reviewing cases, performing procedures, etc.
Management Issues –
Didactic sessions in the core curriculum cover major management topics
including budget, billing, quality control, quality assurance, and personnel
management. Residents participate in daily administrative activities and
receive didactic, as well as bench instruction, in Information Management.
Inspections – All
residents participate in yearly College of American Pathologists (CAP)
self-inspections. Residents also participate with faculty in CAP inspections
of other facilities.
Teaching – Residents
participate in the teaching of Pathology to medical students, allied health
students, and other pathology residents and fellows.
Research / Publishing –
Residents are expected to participate in research activities and/or the
publishing of interesting pathology findings during their Pathology rotations.
