VISION OF THE DEPARTMENT
OF PATHOLOGY The Department of Pathology at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, Shreveport is committed to excellence in teaching, service, and research. Our teaching focuses on medical students, residents, fellows, and graduate students. Several fellowship programs expand the spectrum of graduate teaching in Pathology. Our residency and fellowship programs aim at providing individualized training according to the specific needs of the trainees. Training can be oriented toward private practice or academic careers. We excel in service, providing state of the art, prompt, and comprehensive service to our patients. Our faculty has varied interests and areas of subspecialty training. There are faculty members identified with each of the main recognized areas of expertise in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology. Both Anatomic and Clinical Pathology are fully staffed to provide excellent training to residents and fellows. In the research area, the Department of Pathology is developing
a strong basic research program centered on extracellular matrix. A Pathobiology
arm of the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology PhD program, centered
in the Department of Pathology, has been created to attract PhD students
interested in pathology-oriented research areas. Although we do not have
a Masters or PhD program in Pathology at the present time, our faculty
members participate in programs from other departments at our institution,
fostering interdisciplinary interactions. Clinically oriented faculty
engages in a variety of research projects bridging basic science and clinical
arenas. Our researchers actively interact with those in other departments
and participate in a number of multidisciplinary projects. There are numerous
opportunities for our trainees to participate in research - clinical,
basic, and translational. Stephen M.
