Medical Center Clinics, Inc.

History:

In December of 1968 a group of eleven leading local physicians, all members of the visiting staff of Confederate Memorial Medical Center, later known as the LSU Medical Center, formally established the Medical Center Clinics, Inc. These physicians and the departmental residency programs they represented are listed below:

  • Herbert D. Tucker, M.D. - Cardiology
  • Edgar Hull, M.D. - Internal Medicine
  • Erich K. Lang, M.D. - Radiology
  • Dudley R. Isom, D.D.S. - Oral Surgery
  • Samuel D. Cummins, M.D. - Pathology
  • Bert E. Trichel, M.D. - Urology
  • Clarence H. Webb, M.D. - Pediatrics

  • Thomas A. Norris II, M.D. - Orthopedics
  • Charles D. Knight Sr., M.D. - Surgery
  • James Woodfin Wilson Jr., M.D. - Internal Medicine

They were assisted in this endeavor by Harry R. Nelson, general council and by Daniel L. Butler, CPA. Together they designed the framework under which the Medical Clinics, Inc. Board of Directors began operations, and continues to operate to this day.

Purpose:

The sole purpose of the Medical Clinics, Inc. is, as stated in the articles of incorporation, "to receive, administer, and donate funds assigned to it by the members of the Visiting Staff of Confederate Memorial Medical Center, Shreveport Louisiana...all for educational, charitable and scientific purposes." As a result, such funds received have been invested and managed by the original board and its successors so that, through the years, the income has inured to the benefit of the residency programs in the form of individal annual grants. The size of each annual grant is based on investment return at the discretion of the board. These grants have been used in different ways by the departments to further their respective educational programs.

Successors:

Successors to the original board have been chosen from local physicians who have some tie to a residency program at the former Confederate Memorial Medical Center in one of the above departments.

Many of these physicians were trained in programs administered by members of the original board and presently have active local practices, or are retired. All have been active in one way or another in their respective departmental residency programs. The current board of directors and the departments in which they have been involved are:

  • James F. Batte, D.D.S. - Oral Surgery
  • W. Douglas King, M.D. - Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Gordon M. Mead, M.D. - Orthopedics
